Editorial Independence Policy

At Embarcadero Media, our mission requires a sustainable business model that ensures both a reliable source of news and information as well as a commitment to editorial independence.

We believe our strength is found in high-quality, independent journalism in the public interest. All Embarcadero Media employees are committed first and foremost to that service.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support. Money does not influence coverage.

The editorial staff has final authority over the subjects we choose to cover and the manner in which we cover them. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of revenue, and we do not allow supporters to influence our news coverage or use their contributions as leverage.

Embarcadero Media is committed to transparency in every aspect of our funding. Our organization will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.

Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but we will maintain editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.
